Course A (Gonçalves): Journalism in a World of Unequal Media Systems*This seminar explores how different media systems shape information structures around the world, with a focus on how political regimes, media plurality, and clientelism influence journalism models and practices. Drawing on key theories from media systems and journalism studies, the first part of the course examines media systems in liberal, hybrid, and authoritarian contexts. In the second part, we turn to how these systems impact journalistic roles, norms, and professional adaptation. Finally, students will conduct case studies of specific countries, critically applying the concepts and examples discussed earlier in the course.

Course B (Shomron): Transforming into a Digital Society*
This seminar aims to explore how the ever-increasing adoption of new digital technologies is altering the human experience. During the seminar, we will reflect on issues like surveillance, remote services, the digital divide, privacy, artificial intelligence, the quantified self, and information overload to better understand the digitization of society. The seminar will also discuss central theoretical approaches such as technological determinism and social constructivism. While the course reading will include theoretical and empirical scientific literature, the consumption of news, movies, television shows, books, podcasts, and social media influencers is highly encouraged during the semester.
